“That’s him! I’m sure it is,” Shaina sent excitedly, but Tyson was relieved to see that she still wore the same perpetually bored expression that was part of her Mistress Sender persona.

“That’s him all right. Don’t act too eager, but see if he’s for sale. If we’re lucky, we could be off Freak Planet in time for dinner.”

Shaina approached the Chancellor’s son casually and Ty followed on his leash. Paul was crouched in the far corner of his stall, wearing a diamond-studded sheath and collar. Aside from looking a little paler and a great deal thinner than the idol Faron had given them, he seemed completely unharmed. He had a mild, unremarkably handsome face and light brown hair with blond streaks. In fact, his eyes were the only feature in his face that was anything but nondescript. They were wide and beautiful, almost too large for his face, and Ty couldn’t quite make out their color, no matter how long he looked, because they seemed to shift constantly, slipping from deep blue to ocean green to chocolate brown to glowing gold as he watched. In their gorgeous, jewellike depths there was nothing but unruffled serenity, and his thin body appeared unmarked. Of course, Tyson thought grimly, who knew what kind of psychological and emotional torture the poor kid had been through? Those kinds of scars wouldn’t show on the surface.

“What about this one. Why is he here?” he heard Shaina asking. “What’s his name?”

“That one has no name. He is the Executor’s special favorite.”

“If he’s such a favorite, why is he here in the common quarters?” Shaina looped the leash around her wrist and pulled Ty closer, as though she were signaling a pet dog to heel. Tyson obediently crouched on the orange flooring beside her, which allowed him an eye-level view inside the stall.

“It is unclear if he had done anything to displease her. Perhaps she simply likes to offer him to her guests.” T’lar shrugged his rack-thin shoulders with chilling indifference. “He’s been here ever since he came to the Palace almost, let me see…two solar months now. I’m not certain of his planet of origin. Her Excellency takes him to her room now and again, but not above once a week or so, I should say. Other than that he is free for common use. Would you like to try him?”

“I don’t know…. Let me see him closer. Come here, boy,” Shaina commanded imperiously, holding out one hand. Immediately, Paul got to his hands and knees and crawled over to her. He rubbed one cheek mechanically against her open palm and gave her a look of abject devotion that was utterly devoid of intelligence. Ty looked again to be sure he was seeing correctly, but the beautiful, glowing eyes of the Chancellor’s son were completely empty.

“Goddess, what’s been done to him?” Shaina’s mental voice was horrified.

“Don’t know. Lights are on but nobody’s home.”

“He seems, uh, most compliant. More so than most of the other slaves I’ve seen,” Shaina remarked, withdrawing her hand from Paul’s cheek with a slight shudder.
